Lane closures will take place on the M27 for the next seven months when work on upgrading a bridge near Park Gate starts next week.
Motorists entering and exiting junction 9 of the motorway at Segensworth will be faced with carriageway closures and narrow lanes during the seven-month works to replace a metal barrier on the motorway bridge with a new concrete central reservation barrier.
Building work will begin on Monday February 18 and is due to be completed by the end of September.
Steve Cobb, Highways Agency Structures Manager said: “The existing bridge supports and joints have come to the end of their life and need to be replaced to provide safe and reliable journeys for the many drivers that use this junction.
“While we are upgrading the bridge we will take the opportunity to replace the existing metal central reservation barrier with a concrete one which will minimise disruption caused by doing this at a later stage.”
The first phase of the work is to resurface sections of lane 3 and the hard shoulder and will mean overnight lane closures. That is expected to be complete by mid March.
Once the resurfacing has been completed, narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit will be introduced with a free recovery service provided. This has been planned to be carried out after separate work to improve the eastbound carriageway of the M27 between junctions 4 and junction 5 earlier in March.
To set up and remove the narrow lanes there will be overnight closures of both carriageways between junctions 8 and 10, including the slip roads at junction 9. The roundabout and slip roads will be closed to replace the joints. The Highways Agency said these closures will be publicised in advance.
