Councillors have branded a Warsash pub’s new sign as “cheap and tacky” and have deferred a decision for permission for the sign.

Warsash ward Councillor Mike Ford said a planning application for a new totem illuminated sign, which has already been put up outside the Silver Fern Pub in Warsash Road, was not in keeping with the other signs along the street.

The pub’s new sign features a green backdrop with gold writing for the Silver Fern and above it a white backdrop with green letters for its pub company Greene King.

Lights shine over both parts of the sign to illuminate it in the dark.

Planning committee councillors agreed with Cllr Ford who said he had no problems with the green and gold sign, but the white one when illuminated at night was “a cheapened look”.

He said: “It’s exacerbated because it looks more cheap and tacky. It looks out of character and not in keeping with Warsash.

“It’s nothing against this pub in particular but looking down Warsash Road nothing else is illuminated like this. The white part of the sign cheapens it.”

A unanimous verdict was made to defer a decision on the planning application for officers to negotiate amore preferable colour.
